Back in 2009, I was asked by Tsunetake Ito to write a hook for a song that would be performed by a Japanese emcee, K.I.C.E. The concept for the track was simple: create a Hip-Hop version of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song”. It would have the same concept, the same name, but certainly not the same sound. I revisited the original version, and wrote my lyrical interpretation of it (I even wrote a verse for it, but I didn’t record it for many reasons). Substantial added his verse and I was never contacted about its release.
Fast forward to 2012. A couple weeks ago, I get a link on Facebook from a fan with my name tagged onto it. Curious to see what this link was, I clicked on the URL in the notification e-mail to see it. To my surprise, it’s the song I recorded for Tsunetake and K.I.C.E.! I was very shocked, but it was a nice surprise.
Take a listen to “Redemption Song” feat. myself and Substantial from K.I.C.E.’s 2009 EP Sukui No Uta.
Shouts to Hazey EightyTwo for the hookup!
